Large, rare Orange and Grey Antique Navajo Rug, by Ruby + George.
Circa 1910, this Indigo Blue, Cream, and Orange stacked borders that are not closed, allowing the sacred energy contained in the design to circulate. Gray and black serrated triangles make zigzag width-wise across this weaving.

Hard to weave size makes this very rare and desirable and is without any bleed to the rare orange dyes used, but with fading expected with this age of textile.

Minor wear and old repairs throughout, this retains all four corner tassels. Strong and made for the floor, there are many useful decades left in this beauty.

Transitional Navajo rug from the late 1890s when the Navajos were changing weaving styles from blankets to floor coverings. Heavy Hudson Bay and Pendleton blankets had replaced their own traditional wares and traders like JB Moore were working to have the Navajo weavers make floor coverings instead. This is a product of that period, with a rectangular border that has gray and brown strips at either end. Large, bold chevrons of black and red compose the design.

Large antique Red Mesa Navajo rug 7’4” x 4’9”. This type of rug is known as a ranch rug, as it was specifically designed and made for the large ranch houses that were common in the Red Mesa region around 1910. Rare large size with expertly made wavy red border, barber striping, and outlines; all without any bleed to the dye. Asymmetric diamond lozenge center. Minor wear and old repairs throughout.

Navajo Rug Masterpiece:
Large Antique Navajo Rug in Yei Pictorial style from Lukachukai weaving region of the Navajo Nation, famous for this type of design.
46” x 71”
Beautiful natural grey ground with dramatic Rainbow Yeibichai surrounding the four standing figures of masked warriors, parading in ceremonial regalia for their yearly healing ritual. They carry staffs of feathers and adorn themselves with earrings and necklaces of their finest jewelry.
Bright orange aniline dye was used for the wool in some of skirts, shirts, and even in the legs of one of the figures.  This color has not run or faded, quite rare indeed.  The detail is incredible, especially being these are made from memory without any plans or drawings.  From the feathers on their heads, to their shapely calves and stunning condition.
The designs for these weaving come from sacred sand paintings that are destroyed after each use.  At first they were frowned upon when woven into permanent rugs such as these by the medicine men that practice this ancient religion.  The maker will often include a spirit line on the border of the tapestry so that any sacred energy can escape.
This rug is so precious it is usually only hung up.  The back side shows a strip of linen that has been added for secure attachment to the wall.  George’s parents always displayed this masterpiece in their family room and he hopes to do the same in the home he makes with Ruby…
